I’ve written about the enormous environmental issues caused by coal mining, specifically mountaintop removal coal mining, in the past. A recent study was done on waterways downstream from mining areas in Kentucky and West Virginia, and lo and behold they found high toxin levels downstream from the mining areas. All I have to say is “well, duh!” Is this actually news to anyone? I’m sure it’s not news to the poor people living near these mining areas that are suffering the health consequences. Some of the toxicity levels in Kentucky were over 50 times the acceptable level of toxins. 50! This is why we need to curb our energy consumption and find alternatives to coal use. The coal mining industry is poisoning our ecosystems, and folks, that means they are poisoning us. I’ve posted the report on the study.
