Some Recycling Tips September 12, 2009

OK, I see this all the time.  Soda and beer cartons put in the recycling.  Sorry folks, I appreciate the effort, but both of those are no-no’s for recycling.  As a matter of fact, anything that is meant to go into the refrigerator or freezer CANNOT be recycled.  Soda and beer cases fall into that category.  Pizza boxes also fall into this category.  There is a chemical added to that paperboard and cardboard that makes those items non-recyclable.  Now, cereal boxes and anything else you find in your cabinets that is paperboard or cardboard IS recyclable.  So think about it this way.  Cold stuff = no recycling.  Room temperature stuff = recycling.

There is ONE exception that I have run into.  The Hormel Natural Choice lunch meats are in a brown carton.   Those are recyclable.  It has the recycling triangle on the package.  They must not add that chemical to their paperboard.  Good for them.

The recycling triangle on a package or container does not automatically mean that the item is recyclable. It often means only that the product has some recycled content.

    Thanks Jon,
Good point. I will write Hormel and ask them to clarify whether or not the packaging is recyclable.
