Did you see that U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu wants to start painting roofs white and lighten the color of roads to reflect solar heat. I blogged about painting roofs white last September. I’m so happy to hear it coming from our government. Roofs account for 25% of a typical city’s surface and roadways 35%. If the top 100 largest cities painted their rooftops white and used concrete instead of asphalt on their roadways it would offset about 44 metric gigatons, yes GIGATONS, of greenhouse gases. The other benefit of paiting your rooftop white, especially the further south you live, is that your home will be more comfortable and your cooling costs will be lower. Green roofs can also do this, but that’s another blog.
