Don’t just toss those batteries, recycle them. Alkaline batteries should be set aside and recycled. I know locally that Batteries Plus takes non-rechargeable batteries and nationally Whole Foods and Ikea take them. When it comes to rechargeable batteries you can take them to Batteries Plus, Home Depot, Best Buy, Staples and Radio Shack. To find local recycling facilities for batteries go to this site http://earth911.com/hazardous/single-use-batteries/ Batteries in landfulls (yes, I wrote landfulls) or put in incinerators can release dangerous levels of heavy metals and other toxins. We use an old coffee can to collect the batteries and then make a trip every 6 months or so to recycle them. It doesn’t take much time but can make a big difference in ground water and air quality and ultimately in us. These toxins work up the food chain and are eventually found in our bodies.
