Sustainable energy independence is possible and solar is possible even in Northern climates. There is a solar energy village in Alberta Canada. http://www.dlsc.ca/index.htm is the link to the communities website. They use short and long term storage and are able to use solar for 90% of their heat and electric needs throughout the year. This was planned like a subdivision and they are more modest homes with efficiency built into them. It is a great start and shows that it can be done anywhere the sun shines even if it is a cooler climate. I hope you check out the link.
