Paint it all white. That’s according to the study released at the Climate Change Research Conference. According to the research, roofs account for 25% of cities surfaces and pavement for about 35%. If the top 100 largest cities painted all their rooftops white and switched from asphalt to concrete road surfaces (it’s lighter in color) it would offset 44 metric gigatons in greenhouse gases. California is already doing this for commercial buildings and will soon require residential roofs to be heat reflective. This might be something to consider when you’re getting ready to re-roof.
