I’m going to do a two part blog on eco-friendly flooring. Today I’ll cover hard surface flooring options. In our house we have cork (love it), bamboo and linoleum (not vinyl). I love all those, but there are some other great options: recycled metal tiles, reclaimed wood, recycled glass tiles and slabs, high fly ash content concrete, FSC certified wood and natural stone (especially if it’s quarried local to you).
All of these options are easier on the environment and you. These products don’t off-gas into your home and they are made from sustainable, renewable, recycled and recyclable materials. I’m sure if you do a search you’ll come across even more options as more are available all the time.
One other thing to consider, these floors don’t have to be any more expensive then other flooring options. Yes, some will be expensive, but linoleum, especially the tiles, can be a DIY project.
Next time you’re looking for a new floor look into a green floor.
