Try sleeping green. Next time you’re in the market for a new mattress, consider a green mattress. In past blogs I’ve discussed VOC’s and other chemicals in our households, public buildings and work places. There is growing evidence that we are just so saturated by chemicals all around us that it is beginning to affect our health. Think about the amount of time you spend on your mattress and how close you are to it. We are laying out fully on our mattresses and sometimes with our face right next to it. There is the foam in particular that is a petrochemical product and then there are the adhesives and flame retardants.
For my youngest child, after researching, I decided to buy an organic cotton/wool crib mattress. There are a number of benefits to this type of mattress. Wool and cotton breath well and wool helps regulate body temperature, wool is a natural fire retardant, wool is a natural dust mite deterrent and these mattresses don’t off-gas VOC’s or other nasties. I realize some people are allergic to wool and there are other options such as all cotton or natural latex. Plus there is evidence that if the wool is properly cleaned and sealed inside the mattress and wrapped with cotton the allergy issue is mostly eliminated.
I plan on getting my oldest child an organic cotton/wool mattress and when we are ready for a new one in our bedroom I will do the same. So, breathe easy and sleep green.
