Oil from plants? There is a plant that science is working on called a Jatropha tree. It produces fruits that have seeds inside that are filled with oil. The oil from these nuts can be used in diesel engines without any special changes made to the engine or extra refinement to the oil. The trees grow to 25 feet tall and each produce a gallon a year. Researchers are trying to increase the yield. And, get this, a New Zealand airline is going to run a test flight with it in one of the jet engines. Currently China and countries in Africa are working on this technology.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this helps get us off of foreign oil and that it’s cleaner burning to boot.
