Clear the air! (In your home). When you’re painting use only low or no VOC paints. VOC’s are volatile organic compounds. This is one time when organic is not good. VOC’s are in a bunch of things, but for today I’m going to concentrate on paints. VOC’s are harmful to people, animals and the environment. Many paint companies are now offering low or no VOC paints. Pittsburgh, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and Safecoat are all brands that have great safe paints.
If you’re a person who has allergies, sensitivities or asthma then you definitely want one of these or you could go a step further and get a traditional milk paint or a colored plaster. BTW, the milk paint isn’t good for individuals with milk allergies or lactose intolerance. If you want to find more options just do an internet search for low or no VOC paint.
Some other benefits are clean-up is soap and water, better water quality, and no strong smell of paint. These paints are used a lot in hospitals and schools. Keep in mind the air in your home can be 3 to 10 times more polluted than the air outside your home.
